MAGAZINE 2 – BARNT – WHAT IS A NUMBER, THAT A MAN MAY KNOW IT?
After appearing on record for the first time as part of Cologne Tape (Magazine 1), BARNT now releases his debut on MAGAZINE: The EP What Is A Number, That A Man May Know It? is a hypnotic and free-floating haze, heavily influenced by the dance floor. Few times before has the psychedelic energy of the 1970’s been combined with techno house in such an idiosyncratic way.
Collection is a track concerned with gradual development, the slow movement of history. It begins quietly; the beat drops in; more and more drums are being added, a voice (or something totally different?), a baseline, a flute, a piano (a piano?), another baseline. Everything that was on the verge of fraying when groups like The Who or Ash Ra Tempel exaggerated the free form, is being focussed here by the unrelenting will for quantization. A track that reflects upon the cosmic sessions circa 1970 on the one hand and the rediscovery of repetitivism around 1990 on the other. In 2010. Collection confirms that only from this distance can some musical styles of the late last century be fully processed by our historical consciousness to produce a new music that is beyond mere eclecticism.
Minister: A rhythmical soundscape cut by razor sharp 909 drums. The tension rises and rises – suddenly everything breaks off... but before there is silence, a hysteric staccato of a piano starts. The individual elements are brought together here in an completely unorthodox way to produce an unforgettable track that (as test pressing) has already ignited dance floors. Finally, What Is A Number, That A Man May Know It? is the ceremonial climax of the record. A "Sonnenaufgangssonate" (Sunrise Sonata) that Beethoven could have programmed on his return from a long summer festival, had he lived in 2010.
