2u4u is a collection of 16 versions, covers, rearrangements and interpretations of the music of jay dee, j dilla, the one and only james yancey. played and recorded live by fat albert einstein with the help of tylana renga playing violin and peter jacobson on cello, for move and labcabin strings. adam reece lends a hand on bass for dub dilla. the end result is a collection of songs ranging from the delicate and sincere gentle rain, the almost true textbook touch, to the devastatingly triumphant eternal fire.

in the 80s, a nigerian dj named hycentto junior was notorious for making onitsha people dance on his grooves. soon, influenced by u.s hip-hop artists, he began rapping on top of the music he played. his eccentric style drew the attention of the biggest name, and the famous nkono teles decided to work with him on his next lp, mama groove. their project was released in 1991. due to unfortunate circumstances, the number of copies available was really low, making it very hard to find. more than 25 years later, working for a motor company, hycentto met online with french music passionate collective “lorem ipsum”, that had randomly found his mama groove lp. the result is a reissue auditioning all the 1991 mama groove’s tracks and two bonuses selected from his first 1984 album, at a party last night. the unique variety of sounds and genres, covering electro hip-hop, digi reggae and disco-funk, will carry you from poolside to late night dancefloors!

this is a rare gem of a record from fantastic soul band the soul kids stemming from the democratic republic of congo, including covers of james brown & the mighty flames hit singles -lickin stick- (1968), -papa s got a brand new bag- (1965), wilson pickett’s -hey jude- and a french vocal version of otis redding’s soul hit -respect -. this amazing young band, which released only four 7inch singles and one album, is a great example of the influence of soul music and french pop bridging to the new afro soul scene that the musicians of kinshasa were involved in during the time of post-independence. ngoma was one of the first record labels intent on providing local artists recordings from both sides of the congo river to the people of the drc and west africa. created in 1948 by a greek man by the name of nicolas jeronimidis, the ngoma label was active through 1968, pressed in france until 1971, with a tremendous catalogue, including this historical and essential soul masterpiece!

bristol’s finest reggae producer meets doncaster’s number one dancehall mc as mr benn & parly b join forces for an ep chock full of vibes. first up -gwarn go bathe- is a cautionary tale of lacking personal hygene in the dance underpinned by a bubbling dancehall riddim. -heat up- is much of the same as things get hotter, whilst -session cork- slows things down a little with some more laid back vibes. despite working on various remixes together, this is the first time mr benn and parly b have worked in a combination - hopefully the first of many more to come!

the music contained in this album invokes the vibes and spirit that were so crucial to much of the music recorded during the 1960s & 70s in jamaica. if you talk to the musicians and singers of this era, they will tell you that the driving force behind the songs they created was the sheer love of music. this is one of the reasons these recordings are so powerful and move listeners to this day. music like this can only be made by those who were schooled in the studios and yards around kingston and is not something that can be easily reproduced outside jamaica. the kingston all stars represent some of the most legendary musicians to ever grace the little island & it is thanks to their passion and dedication that we have a lifetime of music to enjoy

spice 1 is an undisputed west coast legend, who first hit the scene after the n.w.a. and closer to home too $hort explosion of the late 80s. as history showed, he continued that bloodline with finesse and authority. his nasal flow is menacing and strong, and fans have been consistently captivated by his hood tales since his self-titled debut in 1992. if you want thematic range with your mcs, spice isn’t that dude he is all about crime tales and the perils of ghetto life. and he attacks that storytelling sweet spot with each new cut. spice 1 boasted four singles by the time it was all said and done, and breezed to gold status on the strength of cuts like the catchy east bay gangster, the heartfelt tales and truths of welcome to the ghetto, and the thick, grooving in my neighborhood. he even produced the alcohol-themed 187 proof, another of the albums singles, and the hands-down cleverest vocal outing on the lp. sonically, the backdrops on spice 1 range from plunky, keyboard-bassline funk to deeper, fuzzy 70s samples and he sounds strong on top of both. break yourself is fueled with an electro-funk drive, 1-800 spice brings reggae flavor, and peace to my nine gets chunkier, with a well-placed p-funk one nation under a groove sample. presented here on official retail vinyl for the first time since its initial release 26 years ago, spice 1s debut holds the test of time and carries the california gangsta flag with pride. some colors just don’t fade.

songs about the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and the fate of war orphans, backed by grooves equally taking influence from arabic sounds, american funk as well as neighboring ethiopia. kamal keila was among the first artist we met in sudan during our two trips to khartoum and omdurman last year. he is one of the key figures of the sudanese jazz scene that was a vital part of the musical culture in sudan from the mid 1960s until the islamist revolution in the late 1980s. when we meet kamal he luckily presented us with two mold covered studio reels. each tape included five tracks. one with english lyrics and another with arabic ones. musically you can hear the influence of neighboring ethiopia much more than on other sudanese recordings of the time, as well as references to fela and american funk and soul. his lyrics, at least when he sings in english which gave him more freedom from censorship, are very political. a brave statement in the political climate of sudan of the last decades, preaching for the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and singing the blues about the fate of war orphans called shmasha. a note inside one of the boxes specified the track titles, durations and the fact that the sessions were recorded on the 12th of august 1992. both sessions stand as a hearable testament how kamal keila stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics. kamal keilas album is the first in a series of releases covering the sudanese jazz scene on habibi funk. be on the lookout for albums by the scorpions and sharhabeel coming soon.

los angeles producer sweatson klank builds his productions as if they were films, developing a story from start to finish. stylistically, fine lines his debut full length for friends of friends, picks up where his 2017 then i was me’ ep left off, melding forward thinking hip hop and electronics as a back drop for a soulful and sultry journey through a tumultuous love affair, loss of self, and the dark empty spaces in our minds. the songs on fine lines sit in a space occupied by hip hop, future r&b and house, yet the record cleverly transcends any single genre. while much of the production is hard hitting, the album manages to walk a tightrope between heartache and swagger. a meticulous fine line that weaves itself like a thread throughout. sweatson klank enlists a number of features on the album including newcomers ana calvo, sarah saldivia, and annie bass as well as past collaborator, montreal producer ango.

the remarkable thing about belp s new album is its two-dimensional function. it works both on a loud and a quiet volume. some tracks would go down well as a club track, like opener travelling thru galaxies . this track brings back memories of the best work released on the hyperdub label, with it s fine combination of synths and irresistible, dubby beats. elsewhere, off ending might start off as dancehall-but-not-quite dancehall track but when half way the synths kick in they change the feeling of the track to a more cerebral level.
