another very special ep on al zanders a to z label teaming up this time with vocalist sheyi, for a one-off foray into broken beat territory. the story of its inspiration begins with a trip to notting hill record & tape exchange... after asking for some broken beat, the assistant ventured a withering opinion that -won t be monotonous enough, try the house music section instead- turns out it was phil asher of co-op fame - who, after establishing a genuine desire for said genre - sold al a bunch of west london music which became the influence for this ep. allowing sheyi to shine over a bare bones, syncopated rhythm track on the title cut and an equally stripped down satisfy al amps up the groove, with the g.i.t dub, which was made for ig culture s radio show. limited run on these - don t snooze !

next up on nang it is time for a slice of spot-on male vocal house and disco. liverpool based thomas lang made some fine albums in the 80s and 90s with john murphy (who went on to carve a highly successful career in movie tracks) and david hughes. somewhere in between that and a string of recent albums (“torch songs” and “the german alphabet”) he also managed to buy one of the finest recording studios in north west england, parr street studios (the “abbey road of the north”). we are pleased here at nang to see a new avenue turned in tom’s life, his first foray into the dance world. “scared” was written with late liverpool songwriter john uriel quite some time ago. it first emerged as a b-side to tom’s comeback single “august day” in 2011. here at nang we always loved the smooth and sophisticated vocal and melody. when tom suggested some remixes we were on board.

folks, here is tilly jam number four, served by till von sein with a striking can’t stop, won’t stop attitude. as if the first three fourtrackers were just heating things up, he’s firing out another ensemble of four to bring serious exercise to the floor. “say say say”, the opening title track of this ep checks many trademarks its originator is known and praised for. an explicitly soulful affair, even flexing some g-funk muscles here and there. crackling vinyl noise in the background, warm and thick bass footing, a bassline doing the filterhouse-routine and a sample heavy arrangement that even gets a boost-up after half of its running time. then there is “shadrach”. go do some exegesis if interested where that name stems from. we can assure you, this jazz-infused build-up including nervous hi-hat patterns, a boldly bass groove, a frenzy drum-solo, inciting chants and a horn section scaling things up, stems directly from peaktime heaven. and on b1, “impala” is taking up the thread of this rather outgoing vibe, tvs is going for with this set of tunes. find an energetic beat providing the ground work for filtered adlibs that kinda nail what comes to mind when this track gets mixed in. “whoo-hoo-hoo” – that’s right. just add some subtle percussive lining and let a saxophone take over and you’ll have another trigger for floor-ecstasy at hand. cooling things off a little bit it’s “baden powell dr” as closing cut. tilly is winding up the melancholy-meter on this one, reversing elements and by adding pianochords and synth-pads, infusing an overall mood of wind-whistling summertime-sadness

the wonderfully monikered golden flamingo was one of many labels operating alongside the now legendary p&p records imprint in late 70 s to early 80 s nyc. fans of deep disco, raw gritty soul and rare as hen s teeth electro and early rap know of the cult status of it s brief but influential output and in recent years the p&p label and it s associated entities have enjoyed further popularity through the exposure of it s music by some of the world s most respected dj s and selectors, and rightfully so. an amazingly lo-fi, endearing and overtly underground aesthetic runs through all of the labels, from the label artwork down to the music itself. this style is evident on margo williams epic god save and protect all the children , a colossally rare 12- from back in 1980.

essential repress of stunning 1977 disco-soul rarity, written, produced and arranged by the incredible team of norman connors, reggie lucas and james mtume. vitamin e, a a short-lived group that yielded only 2 singles and one long player during their time certainly knew who to work with in the studio. kiss away is an absolute belter, raw and raunchy funk riffing gives way to some ultra smooth, grown-up stepping soul awash with some stellar string arrangements. this one is definitely for the dancers, it simply glides along with the utmost class and sophistication, an incredibly uplifting and funky cut that features here in it s 1977 special disco version guise as per the original buddah records release. on the flip is a cool cover of neil sedaka s 1974 hit laughter in the rain - a sweet version, no doubt, but the real winner is the stellar a-side. reissued, remastered and re-presented for 2018 by above board distribution - 100% legit and licensed.

harlem s legendary disco label queen constance has long been a cult favourite among fans of underground dance music for decades. one of many labels operating under the equally legendary p&p family of imprints queen constance was operated by one peter brown, a truly colossal figure in nyc s music scene, it s catalogue still fascinates music lovers to this day. covering a wide range of styles including gospel, early rap and disco the label s output continually finds it way into the playlists of respected dj s and selectors across the globe. high fidelity will be the first in a series of queen constance rarities to be reissued, an extremely rare and coveted record that can change hands on the second hand market for big big money, avoid those low rent bootlegs that are out there and cop this fully licensed repress. the group s self-titled sole long-player is a fantastic 6 track set of gritty, soulful and uplifting funky disco with a diy edge. not too much is known about the artists themselves, or even when the record was performed, recorded or released but it certainly sounds like a group who knew their craft inside out. the energy is high across the record and the group sound like they re on fire, just check the outrageously funkified magic carpet and you ll see what we mean. amazing. the whole project has that enchanting lo-fi, back-street feel to it in terms of production and the mind boggles as to how such a record would have come off had it been recorded at a motown or any other big studio, but no matter as this release is perfect the way it is, an essential piece of street-level nyc disco straight from the underground.

reissue of balearic gem spanglish movement from little known band hot pepper! originally released as a private pressing in 1978 and featuring famous drummer jesus munoz tilico, a giant musician who appeared on countless recordings and accompanied famous figures like paul mauriat and carl tjader among many others. four superb long tracks including the cosmic underground club classic ritual song. hot pepper was a studio project created by mexican drummer / producer /arranger jesus munoz tilico who in the late 70s decided to record an album in a disco-funk vein, helped by some of his friends who were top session musicians. “spanglish movement” was the result, written and produced by “tilico”, released in 1978 as a tiny private edition housed in a fabulous afro cover. being tilico an enormous drummer, you can expect here lots of heavy drums, congas and percussion, surrounded by crazy space synths, male-female vocals, latin horns, afro touches and occasional fuzz guitar.

after three major releases by tell, nachtbraker and s3a, its time for debuting italian artist verner to close our beloved trophy quartet. this milanese key virtuoso is ready to blow your mind with this eccentric yet humble ep, taking you on an emotional journey. long stretched pads, playful chord progressions, organic percussion all produced with analogue 70s and 80s vintage synthesizers and drum computers in verners studio reminding us a bit of harvey sutherland and nu guineas style. were talking groove, funk, jazz but also house and soundtrack style compositions which together form a very complete record carefully a&rd by nachtbraker. drop the needle on the a side and youll start off with linizio, a majestic piece of synthwork. hurdling through different emotions and vibes, this could easily be the intro of one of your favourite 80s tv series. upset takes you on a happy groovy tour whilst crash of the web era and the motion pictures take us on a trippy and ambient voyage that is hard to wake up from. when flipping the record to the b side, verner is stepping back into the groove and funk with tecladista, arguably the dance floor hit of this debut ep. starting of with again a majestic synth intro area drops into a festive funk and jazz bomb with some intricate synth work treating us with some lovely solos. closing this versatile ep is late night job, a deep, deep tune with a thriving baseline and mesmerizing synths. we suggest to dont sleep on this one and have a listen to this piece of art by the very talented verner.

in 1982, a group of friends deep into post-punk, jazz and dub got together in mad professors studio and lay down their youthful interpretation of a nyc disco cut. their unique take included trombone, vibraphone, piano, and an ital dose of tape delay. they called the song trouble and released two versions (vocal and dub) on their friend tony mcdermott s !drum! label with artwork inspired by russian constructivism. tip! . the group, comprised of justin langlands, chrysta jones, john schofield, tom dixon, and dave killen, decided to call themselves a-team, having no idea that mr.t and co. would make them almost totally ungoogle-able 30 years later. the result of their adolescent studio idealism sounds akin to otherdisco misfits like arthur russell, maximum joy, talking drums and wouldn t sound out of place on legendary nyc label 99 records. remastered with an extended club dub formaximum dance-floor action.

philippe cohen solal (of gotan project) celebrates the 50th anniversary of summer of love, covering one of its anthems “aquarius / let the sunshine in” of hair the musical which premiered on stage in october 1967. a complex but soothing modern reggae moombathon riddim carried by the ethereal harmonies of legendary jamaican reggae singer horace andy (massive attack, skylarking, ain’t no sunshine...) with a delivering coda sung by an empowering choir.

for his inaugural ep under new guise ‘yem gel, nts manchester resident and visual artist alecs pierce comes through with a four-track cacophony of sounds for dave maclean (django django) run label kick + clap. from previous experimental outings as obsidian pond, gristed petunia and, handi dogh he returns with this new project based solely on electronic compositions, giving the multi-instrumentalist artist a chance to further explore his electronic leanings. operating with a clear mission statement, yem gel moniker seeks to live up to its names reference to malleable ‘fictional future plastics by offering a set of genre-spanning compositions, drawing from multiple influences from ambient, drum ‘n bass or grime and leaving us wondering where he might take us next.

“ferns and stuff” is wild & free’s debut single on discotexas. it’s part of the much anticipated debut album from this la based duo. titled “shapes on shapes” the album sees drew kramer and george cochrane deliver on the promise of their early releases with 11 tracks of languorous poolside disco, tropical pop and balearic house. this first advance single stands as a perfect example of the exotic album s vibe.
both multi-instrumentalists, singers and producers in their own right, the pair came together in 2015 and have spent the past 2 years crafting a series of acclaimed eps and remixes (for the likes of joe goddard (hot chip), panama, gigamesh, rac and ben browning of cut/copy) that saw them tipped by the likes of spin, xlr8r, indie shuffle and many more and take their live show on the road playing alongside the likes of brooklyn’s body language.

tom dicicco is best known for his stern techno output, so its intriguing to seem him donning a new alias, veyg, and exploring a new sound palette. as with the last veyg 12inch, the tone here is somewhere around the slower tempo, discoid acid end of the spectrum, and hes made the sound his own. my sweet soul is a dusty affair with squashed drums and looped up bongos rubbing up against trippy globules of lysergic monosynth action. when they fall- is a downcast electro track for rainy sundays, while these feelings waits for the clouds to break and dances on the damp lawn with no shoes on. west of the sun is the most adventurous offering on the 12inch, escaping the 4/4 thud and twirling in an off-grid stylee with ample dub fx tugging the melodic parts around in a mellifluous haze of experimentation.

300 hand numbered copies with added insert. on the 17th of june 1976, a large crowd of young south africans marched through the streets of downtown johannesburg. the protest was an outpouring of public disgust at the recent actions of the apartheid government and its racist police force who, just the day before, had violently quashed an uprising of black school children in soweto who were protesting the humiliating enforcement of afrikaans in their schools. in the process, they shot dead a boy called hector pieterson. he was 12 years old. the harrowing photo of umbiswa makhubo carrying hector s body through the dusty streets of soweto, taken by a local journalist that day, spelt the beginning of the end of apartheid. the world now had a view into what was really happening under the racist national party.

western australia s red ember records is back from another archive diving adventure. -embers only : swan songs- presents four previously-unreleased, deeply emotive cuts by ewan jansen written between 1999-2000. the lead track swan marks the dance-floor tone in the collection with a hypnotic pseudo-electro groove sky lined by cathedral-like chords. following on, sea for yourself reaches into deep minimal house territory with a powerfully gentle, piano topped, 4/4 approach. on the flipside, the earnest and leafy love machine is drawn down the proverbial path, dropping broken beats and inhibitions along the way. the collection is signed off with the ambient chordal wash of afterlude ... an introspective repeater equally on call for any early morning after party or your final few waking moments.

taken from gabe gurnsey’s upcoming debut solo lp, ‘physical’ on phantasy, eyes over zones in on a proto-hacienda groove that’s undistilled militant funk, loose and lucid elements of electro and dub-laden drums conspire to offer an alluring landscape for gurnsey’s restless vocals. the harder-hitting extended dub takes more precise aim at the dancefloor, allowing each disparate, analogue element more room to unfold across a throbbing baseline.
