the 2 bears debut album be strong has been a revelation. the hirsute duo made up of joe goddard of hot chip & raf rundell aka the raf daddy have made a record that has touched people from many a different musical and cultural background. their roots of course, lay in house music and its that genre that essentially defines the 2 bears. so it only felt right that they released a 12 inch with exquisite remixes of one of the 2 bears original musical outputs, be strong!

room 315 step up to the fledgling kinfolk imprint for three tasty psyche-edit numbers, opener >the eon men< sets the standard with its robust bass pulse driving a slow beat forward on a flurry of digitised synth solo and live guitar action, whilst >night on the shore< begins as a sinister number with lurching bass, but soon opens itself up with its solitary guitar line and floating synth pads which recall the end credits to an 80s thriller, all driven along with minimal 808 percussion. on the flip, edit masters soft rocks provide their own version of >the eon men<, taking the grizzled quality of the original and creating their own minimal wave inspired reworking, with a brittle bassline joined by shady echoes of dub music in its cavernous backdrop and savage low end.

alex and bill met 16 years ago when bill signed one of alex s first productions (is this the rhythm? by rhythmnvibe) to a new york label he was running. alex, whose father lives in the us, was a regular visitor to the states and they sent many happy hours together hanging out at the sound factory bar and comparing maw dubs. when bill returned to the uk in 1996, they had a few sessions together making house music, though neither of them can remember why they never finished anything or, indeed, what became of the tracks. fast forward a few years and they finally got back into the studio to make sweet music together under the moniker hotel motel. since then they have created a rich seam of work that some have already described as, like salvador dali with his pants down being fellated by deirdre barlow. few would disagree.

knowing looks kicked off 2011 for wncl recordings with with his much loved, hard stepping abandoned skip, backed with the acclaimed symphonic masterpiece that was last kiss at the plains hotel. jason hopfner is back again to neatly tie up a busy year at wncl hq, unveilling the classically constructed epic listen to my 45 - described by ben ufo as >lovely. gorgeous. slick. buff etc< … and who are we to disagree. just do what it says on the tin, then flip over for ghost baby - yet another fine example from hopfners rich and varied production cannon, melding super cool minimalism with party breaks. merry christmas from the cassette library!

fantastic debut 12 inch from this d.c. electronic group with will eastman, outputmessage & micah vellian. an upbeat vocal house song with a french disco-style intro and feel. the song is an upbeat, hypnotic, piano-laden tune, set on a sparse, almost melancholic backdrop, while outputmessage lends a subdued, soulful vocal performance. perfect for the summer and a potential club anthem. original and radio edit mixes. opening for thievery corp in d.c. fyi: this single is not available digitally for another 3-4 weeks.

so we went predominanlty stateside for our last outing, and decided to bring things back home this time. hoya003 is a strictly uk affair. opening up on the a-side is one of rudest producers and djs the uk has going for it. this aint a comment on her manners though, they are as impeccable as her production. after ikonika sent us a zip of some hoya potentials, we just knew >fleas< had to be the one featured on this 12 inch. a more sinister, rolling, emotional jam, it still packs as much as punch as ikonikas dj sets. kicking off the b-side is the homie om unit. now, this guy … this guy. are there any superlatives left to desribe his sonic masterpieces that have rocked too many dancefloors and had as many producers scratching their heads and re-assessing their mix-downs? an instant favourite, >fibonnaci 10< was one of the earliest cuts lined up for a release and when you listen you will see why. this guy. seriously. bringing things to a close, we hand over to one of our favourites from the flourishing cardiff scene. why doesnt monky have more music out? is one of those questions that has been asked too many times for our liking. so much so, we may have to take it upon ourselves to change that. but, for now, just enjoy >hipster<. a killer synth-laden nod to early ukg, but looking forward as opposed to sideways. enjoy.

the see it through ep is the debut release from kris le vay. the eponymous a side is the most dance floor orientated track, with kicking drums and a driving, melodic bass line guaranteed to get the crowd moving. its also an awesome headphone experience, with involved, complex percussive elements that keep the ear interested and euphoric breakdowns that truly pull at the heartstrings. the b1, entitled melt, is a cheeky little number that bounces around with plenty of polyrhythm. the counterpoint between the deep bass and twinkling top melody leads to the unconventional, yet mesmerising breakdown. the release is rounded off by one hot ride, which is one hot track! starting with ominous dark synths that spin themselves into a stomping hip-hop tempo beat, this anthemic rich blend of sound winds itself up from a menacing introduction on an exhilarating journey through a complex and intricate soundscape. limited to 300 colour vinyl.

recorded in late 2010 and mixed in a remote studio during the finnish snowstorms of early 2011, donky pitch present >the trick ep<, by helsinki resident and skweee pioneer v.c. six original tracks of synth soaked computer funk, electro inspired slow jams and colourful hip hop heaters. v.c. has been making moves in the skweee scene since the early days (as a solo artist and as 1/4 of supergroup yt). his combination of layered synths, hip hop beats and that type of funk only found in the cold reaches of the nordic region have scored him releases on every skweee label going (flogsta danshall / harmnia / mssy / ddpop / disques mazout) as well as ramp recordings. we felt it only right that he commanded our first true foray into the scandinavian electro funk sound of skweee.
