martyn releases new album voids, his first for ostgut ton over the past year, dutch-born, washington d.c.-based producer martyn has undergone a metamorphosis – one that began with a medical emergency and has dovetailed into personal musical transformation. having narrowly avoided death after suffering a heart attack, martyn reentered his studio and began a process of reassessing the elements that drive him to make music: sampling, unpredictability, melancholy, sci-fi, polyrhythms, texture, ecstatic moments, detroit, interlocking percussion and bass. however, the initial spark to start producing again came through his experience listening to max roach’s 1979 ensemble percussion album m’boom.

after 2016’s mini-album shady and light, composer and guitarist martyn heyne releases his first full-length record electric intervals on the new 7k! imprint. says heyne: the number of parameters that determine a recording appears to be infinite. the mood, instrument, tuning, mics, room, temperature, time of day, all contribute to sound. the magic, once captured, is impossible to recreate. this might seem a hindrance, but it’s really the whole point of recording for me.’ opener ‘carry’, for example, is a composition carefully developed over months with most of the production happening in front of the microphone. ‘wilde wide’, however, was recorded only once as an early-morning improvisation. having worked with dustin o’halloran on the emmy-winning transparent soundtrack and with clarinettist claudio puntin as part of the duo set aglow, heyne’s sound is one of simplified diversity. on his debut album he controls each melody with the precision of a veteran producer.

the second half of the great lengths remixes package offers 3 more vividly contrasting interpretations of album tracks. almost a year on from the release of his debut album >one< and with >saviour of techno< plaudits still bouncing off concrete walls, berghain lynchpin ben klock turns in a remix of is this insanity that distills everything inspirational about both the club and city he calls home. spaceapes cracked vocal is welded to a sort of cavernous piston driven groove while traces of the originals melody fractured into the briefest of shards fight their way to the surface only to sink back into the percussive smog. located well outside of the heavily scrutinised uk hype centres, manchesters rising star illum sphere continues to hone his already distinct sound on the flipsides brilliant orange reworking. a clanking off kilter groove rubs up against an extended mutation of the original melody that pushes the track towards a poignant climax, evoking all the ache of reaching for the stars and landing squarely on ones face.

ending the brief hiatus that followed the >great lengths< lp and accompanying world tour martyn and 3024 usher in the new decade with a brace of remixes from the deepest recesses of the quasi-house community. first out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive, zomby and redshape.

i always like to think my stuff is music for a warm but rainy day . low frequencies do something to your muscles when you listen to them. there have been studies of low frequencies contracting your muscles, and because they contract certain muscles you have the urge to move, you know, to get rid of that itchy feeling in your arms and legs. so that would be a reason to dance. hailing from eindhoven, which back in the day had ties with many chicago and detroit artists and labels. i think what makes music interesting is when an artist incorporates his/her influences and translates it into a unique sounding style. although it might sound a tad arrogant, i d like to think of my music as martyn music . i try not to think of it as dubstep or techno, or house or drum & bass, it s not about genres, it s about music

this is the 5th release on riot radio records, an independent techno label based in scotland. here are 12 artists (the horrorist, paul birken, neil landstrumm, cannibal cooking club, nomad, durkit, dez williams, martyn hare, cymbol, binny, morphamish and lado) each with a wicked track for the first of many sampler lp’s on riot. it’s named a sampler because it is just that, a sample of the various artists and forms of techno that can be heard on our fortnightly riot radio show and also of what’s to come on the label from each of the artists featuring on the lp. that’s because each artist appearing on this lp will be delivering you their own individual release on the label, with each one featuring brand new original tracks and additional solid remixes by various exceptionally talented artists.
