comprised of vancouver producers and multi-instrumentalists nick wisdom and astrological, canadian duo potatohead people boast a number of noteworthy accolades thanks to a their signature sound drawing influences from 90 s boom-bap, future soul, classic jazz, deep house and boogie/funk. beginning with a series of ep s, including their landmark -kosmichemusik- ep, potatohead people s productions quickly made their way to artists like illa j who tapped the duo to produce his now critically acclaimed self-titled album, as well as producers like kaytranada (who co-produced illa j s -strippers- with the pair). supporters such as soulection, nightmares on wax, pomo, dj spinna, big boi, and phife dawg have also played formidable roles in championing the sound of potatohead people worldwide.

the pendletons return with their latest ep, funk forever, a jazz flavored boogie affair with soul inspired song-writing that evokes old school vibes while still staying fresh and current. horn lines, yamaha dx7 keys and snapping hip hop inspired drum programming topped by sweet singing with heartfelt themes, the group carves out a bold new sound on these 5 solid tracks. featuring elive, potatohead people and ishtar. the pendletons are a long-standing boogie-funk and modern soul project of e da boss (of myron and e on stone s throw) and trailer limon. the group emerged with their very first release in 2010, a 7inch inch of coming down/waiting on you on the slept on record label, which set the tone for the group to emerge it instantly became a cult classic receiving constant play at nights like sweater funk and funkmosphere, and fetching for serious sums among collectors. most recently, in 2016, they released the ep gotta get out. the title track caught the ear of renowned dj gilles peterson, who liked it enough to release it on his brownswood bubbler compilation. in 2018 the group is hitting the ground running with a brand new ep out this spring, and a full-length album to follow later later in the year on the renowned bastard jazz label. now armed with a horn section, a vast array of accomplished jazz and funk contributors, and a knack for quality song-writing, the pendletons sound has shaped into something fresh and unique, setting it apart from the legions of imitators.

what started out as a simple email exchange between a young, hungry beatmaker and a seasoned player in the worlds of jazz and midwestern indie hip-hop, has resulted in a vibrant record nearly a decade in the making. on one side of let it out sits miles bonny, a long time musical collaborator who spent his youth soaking in powerful musical moments in nyc under the tutelage of his trumpet-slinging father, francis bonny, and later as a teen immersed in new york s busy indie-hip-hop scene. as he grew up miles cemented himself a niche in the midwest, most notably in lawrence, kansas where tireless forays into beatmaking led to the founding of the much-loved innatesounds crew and record label, as well as a series of solo releases and collaborative projects.

after making waves a few years back via his potatohead people project (with astrological) and co-producing illa j s critically acclaimed self titled lp, vancouver based playboy & producer nick wisdom steps out from behind the boards to deliver his first solo release for bastard jazz. the -intimate strangers- ep mines deep into nick s proclivities for disco, hip-hop, and house flavours. -good times- kicks things off with a snapping four on the floor, deep rhodes chords and a rollicking bassline and vocals courtesy of mr. wisdom himself. -feelin alright- heads into outerspace disco territory with cosmic synths, walking bass, and sultry vocals courtesy of reva devito (hw&w, kaytranada). on the flipside -don t tell- brings in some 80s boogie vibes with downlow vocals from san francisco s k-maxx, while -rock the cash bar- is an instrumental party rocking hip-hop jam sounding like a modern day showbiz & ag.

patrick wade, better known as dead horse beats is a producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist living in montreal, canada. since the release of his first album in 2011, wade has garnered attention for his unique brand of hazy, rhythmic, soul-styled creations, and energetic live spectacles featuring a slough of live instrumentation, electronics and guest performers. after the release 2015 s acclaimed single people lp and a brief stint with london s black butter records, dhb partnered with brooklyn based bastard jazz recordings for his premiere vinyl pressing - the fall 2016 release of bad hopes ep. bad hopes is the culmination of a new, fully realized sonic direction for dead horse beats, inspired by the sounds of the montreal scene in which dhb is embedded, equal parts glittering r&b, and undeniable deep house inspired soundscapes, fusing fully on bad hopes, alongside friends and collaborators frase (vocals on she said) and jason simpkin (additional production and instrumentation throughout) dhb blends his voice and lyrics with bassy grooves, lush synths and sharp, angular percussion into a cohesive, rolling soundscape.

fabrizio martina, the man behind jolly mare, is a champion turntablist, with a master degree in mechanical engineering and a phd in vibration dynamics under his belt. he s currently a full time producer and dj, taking part in festivals across europe from sonar to harvey s discotheque stage at bestival. a graduate of red bull music academy in new york, he has opened acts from masters at work to roy ayers, worked with the likes of soul clap and thundercat, and has already been featured in the likes of pitchfork, mixmag and okayplayer with his dream-like brand of cosmic disco and house.

here on their self titled 12 inch, monkeyrobot deliver four diverse tracks that showcase their skills behind the boards, the keys, with a keen ear for the dancefloor. kicking things off, >brick stomach< is a synth-heavy four-to-the-floor 120 bpm joint that comes off like a floating points visit back in time to 1980s detroit with its rolling snares, arpeggiating synth bassline and cloudy pads. next up, >northern light< filters shimmering space disco vibes through big, thumping instrumental hip-hop drums and moody analog bass. on the flip, >rose gris< takes things in a funkier direction at 100bpm with its syncopated drums, irresistible lead, squelching bassline and all manner of synthesizer explorations. rounding off the ep is >last days<, which still manages to inject a funky 80s analog sound into its melancholy downtempo vibes.
