a long time ago, at a festival far, far away, the members of the legendary borft trio frak were just going to bed in their tent when something caught their attention. now, this was well before fraks rise to international fame - in fact, this moment was swedish music history in the making, because what they heard was someone playing a frak tune. that someone turned out to be kontra-musiks own ulf eriksson and once their paths had crossed, there was no turning back. frak has since released five highly sought after records on kontra-musik and kontra-musik white label.

the ongoing celebration of kontra-musik s 10 years anniversary is basically a recognition of the importance of charisma within the predominantly mechanical sphere of electronic music. to quote label boss ulf eriksson in a recent groove interview: -to release on kontra you need to have developed a unique and personal sound.

sebastian mullaert is of course first of all known as half of minilogue, a duo so influential in the hypnotic field of techno that korg recently named a synthesizer after them. lately, sebastian has focused on his solo path under the wa wu we moniker, releasing stripped back and personal music on his own wa wu we label, the cryptic s.e.l.f label and now on kontra-musik. on the title track travellers, sebastian mullaert uses a straight up techno formula that may surprise listeners who haven t followed his move into wa wu we territory. you almost get the impression sebastian buried a recording destined for a rigid techno label in a deep forest back in the 90 s and has now decided to uncover it again, finding that the track has matured under the black soil.

as an encore to the mesmerizing ccc: bb: bbb: jj release on kontra-musik, tyler friedman brings out his version of what he thinks -dj techno tools- are. this is music for the dancefloor alright, but it s a dancefloor from a strange and slightly uncanny dream. tyler explores the sonic field between the chillingly precise and the vivaciously warped - the disciplined and the untamed. he thrives in that space, creating an eerie microcosmos of evolving harmonies and rhythms that seem to have lives of their own - like music coming out from a haunted clockwork. a suiting apparatus for a label unconcerned with the conventions of time.

tyler friedman returns to kontra-musik with a series of immersive wax maelstroms, adorned with the mind-melting artwork of rafaela drazic. every track on ccc: bb: bbb: jj is a controlled experiment in lysergic dance music, an examination of how far you can warp the constitutive elements of techno without loosing it s essential spine. the result is four evolutionary techno suites full of movement and life that make your brain move just as vigorously as your body. as the personal work of a composer creating soundtracks for artist projects - most notably as a long-term collaborator of the otolith group, the filmmaker collective spearheaded by pioneering afrofuturist theorist kodwo eshun - ccc: bb: bbb: jj sums up everything kontra-musik is about: dancefloor celebrations challenging the boundaries of expectation and genre.

with this release, villa abo (frak) departs from the home planet of borft to create friendship over different systems together with kontra-musik. via twisted machine funk and a grand space opera of analogue synths, villa abo will askew the eternity. the steady pounding of drums and hearts through the galaxy makes you want to keep your 1970:s x-wing ready for battle between doomsday and now, but in the end we ll all dance together under a starry sky filled with debris from exploding death stars.

rivet is back on kontra-musik with a classy funk affair that will be luring us ever deeper into dancefloor delirium.

kondens is a collaboration between swedish electronic music veterans andreas tilliander (mille plateaux/force inc, raster-noton and repeatle) and stefan thor aka folie (mitek). the sound is a hybrid of techy dubstep with a twist and banging dub-influenced techno. pure peak time bliss without losing the love for dub and tape delays. the vinyl debut, first cut ep, includes a stunning deep techno remix signed norman nodge.

this album is a collaboration between labels kontra-musik and kess kill. what would have become of d.a.f. if they had been signed to trojan instead of mute back in the day add a good pinch of absurdism and social realism in the vein of prized film director roy andersson and vanligt folk might just be the answer. the gothenburg groups name can be translated to common people and they make use of primitive electronics, drums and skewed vocals - ranging from harsh social commentary to the purely nonsensical - to create their own take on body music. hambo is the name of a traditional swedish folk dance that was highly popular among the common people at the turn of the last century. with this album, vanligt folk juxtaposes the working class dance phenomena of hambo with modern day rave culture. this is done in the most blasphemous manner thinkable, as is the way of vanligt folk. concepts like nationalism, race and tradition are all treated with the same merry lack of reverence. the only thing that needs to be respected is the dance and those who take part in it, whether accompanied by accordions or drum machines. or both.

after releasing a brilliant and stomping three-tracker on kontra-musik white label last year, ex-durian brother harmonious thelonious returns to the kontra-musik family with an absolute gem of a record. this is everything we want dance music to be: characterful, playful and impossibly funky. harmonious thelonious is a master of crafting organic sounding rhythms but arranging them in a manner that reminds one of a 1970 s car factory. primal pulses running through modern assembly lines, gears and pistons covered in green lianas. the result is a perfect symbiosis between living tissue and mechanical parts - dance music for primitive cyborgs.

andreas tilliander released his first album as mokira at the very turn of the millennium on almighty raster noton. 11 years later, the latest mokira album time axis manipulation was issued on ulf erikssons kontra-musik and now it s time to pick up where we left off with chill out . there s an air of happy retrospect and light solemnity surrounding the new album - enhanced by the fact that it marks kontra-musik s 50th release. with chill out , mokira attempts to bring back the dreamlike state from those magical late nights of his youth spent in front of mtv s chill out zone, to go back to his ambient roots using contemporary techniques and perspectives. the result? well, imagine lee scratch perry and klf enjoying an episode of stranger things on a crappy vintage tv after being hard at work burying old tape recordings in perry s tropical garden. imagine them sitting together totally at peace in a big, cosy sofa while a heavy haze is building up in the room, pleasantly affecting the eerie images on the screen. we always knew kontra-musik s 50th release had to be something quite out of the ordinary. as expected, mokira didn t disappoint us one bit. the vinyl lp is accompanied with a download code for a mixed version of the album, containing almost double the amount of tracks. the mixed version makes it easy for the chill out listener to just sit back and let go of reality for a while, just like mokira did 25 years ago in front of his old tv.

for kontra-musik white label s 10th release we give you none other than nuel. the italian producer is closely connected to the aquaplano label run by donato dozzy a natural source of collaboration as they speak the same language, not least in the musical sense. nuel has perfected this dreamlike and seductive speech and it was irresistible for kontra-musik. on the surface nuel s tracks might seem abstract and mathematical, but there s really an abundance of movement and groove in his music. mechanical yet sensual, there s subtle erotic current running through the whole release: it s like a marvin gaye record for robots that just want to get it on.

durian brothers album das macht modern, released on kontra-musik in 2014, remains one of the most sought after highlights in our catalogue. the mad scientists of salon des amateurs produced an eccentric masterpiece that can be described in a multitude of ways, straight dance music not being one of them. one of the brothers, stefan schwander, fills this gap with his solo project harmonious thelonious. inspired by american minimalist music and african rhythm patterns, the result is muscular and twangy like an old radboud mens record on steroids. moist and mechanical at the same time.

following the warm reception of the dance 2xlp album + live cd recording last year, kontra-musik now presents the dance remixes the dance remixed 2 features an ever-growing remix by efdemin - peak hour material without being boorish, just the way kontra-musik likes it. wa wu we and voices from the lake follow up with two tropical jungle expeditions: wa wu we s version of -fusion- is feverishly humid and hot while voices from the lake takes the nocturnal route, brooding darkness, heavy rain and strange creatures of the night squirming away from the flashlight. finally, northern electronics own ulwhednar (abdulla rashim & varg) takes the listener to completely different latitudes with a hyperborean remix filled with chilling harmonies and gangrene-inflicted beats.

andreas tilliander returns to kontra-musik in a grand style with his second tm404 album. titled acidub , this highly anticipated release is much more of an evolution than a repetition of the first superbly self-restricted album, where tilliander even decided to use only one of the two roland tb-303 waveforms. acidub is a more playful and open listening experience, no doubt inspired by his extensive live touring with the tm404 concept. in fact, you can almost hear tilliander s flock of acid machines breaking free from the restrained modus operandi. every sound is like a migratory bird with a heart yearning for high altitude and favourable winds.

the dance is the result of a long lasting musical love affair between kontra-musik s ulf eriksson and sebastian mullaert (aka minilogue). as most love affairs, it started off as an exciting experiment: ulf would play records and sebastian would bring out his music gear and play a live set. as they were touring with this live concept, their sounds started to really integrate, and after one especially fine night at trouw, amsterdam, ulf and sebastian decided it was time to conceive the dance. once the decision was taken, everything else came naturally. the dance was to be recorded live, in one take, at kontra-musik s home field inkonst, malmo, sweden.

as a label manager a lot of music reaches you ears. some you get especially attached to. this release is one of those. the two italian producers massprod and herva (bosconi, delsin) has together produced some music that feels very unique and different.

jonsson & alter are back with 2! the result is eight strong tracks that each shine and glimmer like a roughly cut diamond. the listeners are met by a prouder, matured, and more confident duo on 2. it is music for long club nights, but also perfect for simply listening to as it is dance music that reveals so many layers, so many angles and so much emotion.

with a new alias, tm404, andreas tilliander has created enjoyable ambient dub simmering with life and details. the songs have all been recorded live, in real time in the studio.

tm404 is a new concept from analogue mastermind andreas tilliander aka mokira (kontra-musik, raster-noton, type). tm404 uses a multiple set up of the classic roland machines tb-303, tb-606 and mc-202 to create a mesmerizing acidic techno-drone. tm404 will release a full-length album on kontra-musik in late january and we are very much looking forward. but before that we have another great release to present. kontra-musik 028 is by far our most radical release on so far. this is dance music really pushed the limit. what you are about to hear is the result of morphosis (morphine records) remixing tm404 using his favorite korg machines – the ms20 and the sq10. rabihs own words on the music: quite challenging and not really ordinary dance music. i believe in moving forward with things, with whatever chances and possibilities i have, it is my contribution to this world.

the second of two eps from talented californian newcomer, tyler friedman, has now arrived. a night in the woods ep starts of as a murky rhythmic experiment. when released of its bound, it transforms into a hailstorm of sound that builds in melodic intensity towards a final climax. this is scenic and brave electronic dancemusic that over and over again will capture the focused listener. on the b-side rivet for sure push tyler towards berghain. but now the tool is somewhat different. rivet transforms the cinematic original into a very dirty and dry party stomper.

rivet puts a lot of effort in his sounds and his production. this is not another copycat. first out on the ep >amid the roar< is >metrist<, a sexy march that blends the stiffness 80-ties disco with techno from the future. on the b-side marcel fengler takes his turn on >metrist<. he keeps the string of the original, chops up the bass and creates a dancefloor monster with a big anthem alert stamp on it. amid the roar ends with what might be the strongest track on the ep. this ep will make us dance, of course, as always, with a bit of a kontra-musik twist.

part iii ? manipulation musik. manipulation musik is the darkest and most cinematic piece on this collection of eps. delicate manipulated melodies and melancholic strings moves in and out of a crackling and distorted soundscape, telling an experimental sound tale with a sad ending. on b-side redshape (present, delsin) makes a remix solely using sounds from the original. redshape described his tape dub version like this: ?think disco dub, plonk & pain?. not much to add to that ? it kind of says it all. enjoy!

part ii ? axis audio. mokira once told kontra-musik that three analog tape echoes are needed to produce one mokira track. when listening to the track axis audio you can hear why. metallic bursts of sound hits like waves on an irish shore in autumn. kept together by a solid bassline and a fragile melody axis audio is an excursion in beautiful sounds. on the b-side, echospace (deepcord, modern love) makes you dance. it is distorted, it is minimal, it is raw and last but last not least, it is oh so funky. this track will move dance floors.

part i? time track . mokiras time track is the deepest of dub music and electronic gear has seldom sounded this organic. rolling cords and bassline builds slowly towards the dub meltdown. on the b-side silent servant (sandwell district, historia y violencia) produces a rolling wall of sound. this is a high energy, metallic sounding dance piece ready to serve djs around the globe. to be played loud, not silent.

kontra music comes up with two mind-blowing techno pieces from marcel dettmann. constructed out of parts, samples and inspiration from swedish experimental dub/drone act mokira (type, raster noton & mille plateaux), dettmann delivers two brand new cuts.

detroit artist jason fine is back with a follow up to his critically acclaimed future thought album. the master of the introspective and personal techno sound gives us another killer release, once again transforming daily life experience into beautiful and moving deep techno and house. jason fine continues to play around with layered melodies and harmony mixed with raw and funky drum programming. the ep opens with the track orange, a beautiful monotone organ based techno track, revealing hard times. violet continues in the same vein. blue melodies play around over minor organ chords and heavy kick drum. on the inner tracks blue and red jason with confidence moves into the electro territory, still keeping emotion and atmosphere up front. even though the concept behind this ep is the full color spectrum, the mood is all over blue.

on his first release, >muskelminne ep<, gunnar delivers an indian summer love song, >massagerutin 1<, some deep and glistering morning music with the track >morgonanga< and ends with the raw but perfect bonus beat, >lilla huset pa prärien<. or as gunnar jonsson puts it: >i just want to have a good time with music, no steroids, no tricks, just some soft grooves and some hardware fun. i love older electronic instruments, the way they look and sound makes me feel good inside and gets me going.< eat healthy and ride a bike between the studio sessions that is gunnar jonssons vibe. it is our wish that this ep will end many summer night dance floors.

kontra-musik continues its 10inch remix series. this turn is for ben klock and oni ayhun to get busy and rework tracks from the jason fines future thought album. ben klock now finalizes (may we call it the kontra-musik berghain sessions after shed and dettmann remixes) with a stomping, chicago-esque modern dancefloor cut. by adding vocals but keeping jasons original chords, there is some serious anthem warning to this one. on flip there is some magic! oni ayhun leaves us with a stunning and experimental tech electro kraut excursion. think yello magic orchestra jamming on beats provided by morris day and the time... wooow what a track!! another great piece in the carefully builded kontra musik catalogue! check
