following on from last years exceptional ‘obsession ep’ from art crime is a budding young talent by the name of will lister. originally from lyme regis, will moved up to london to attend goldsmiths university and in his spare time he helps us out behind the counter here at the shop. when he’s not here at the shop you can also hear him playing records on his balamii radio show or his monthly club night, ‘the aten’. ‘the phantom ep’ is his production debut and we’re extremely happy to be putting it out on our main imprint. the title track opens up the ep with heavily reverbed pads, echoed claps, crunchy percussion and repetitive synth stabs that all work together to create spaced-out atmosphere that’s full of twist and turns. flipping over to the b-side, ‘after the light’ picks up the pace with a driving high-hat rhythm and full-bodied kicks that underpin warm piano keys and smooth synth lines. ‘agency’ closes proceedings by turning up the intensity to full with a masterclass in building tension.

up next on phonicas main label we present harrison bdps life unlimited 12inch. over the past few years harry has burst onto the scene with a prolific run of releases for labels such as lost palms, piff and music is love, displaying a wide-ranging sonic palette whether it falls under classification as house, techno, electro, garage... or whatever else he turns his hand to! the 12inches lead track life unlimited starts off as a euphoric italo-flavoured piano-house banger before breaking down into a bleep-tastic middle and back again. it hits all the right spots and will no doubt tick all the boxes for djs looking for a sure-fire peak-time jam! on the b-side the music takes a deeper turn with the immaculately produced dub-techno of fish in the tank which is then followed by the stunning uk garage inspired its all good - this one gets seriously under your skin! its rare for a producer to nail such a variety of different styles on a single record, yet we feel this 12inch truly underlines harry’s versatility yet still displaying his signature sound. three very different tracks, all recognisably harrison bdp.

phonica records welcomes spanish producer extraordinaire pional to it’s main label with the ‘xme / one night stand’ 12”. pional is miguel barros and the madrid based musician has been producing for over a decade. with a string of well received solo releases on hivern discs, permanent vacation, young turks and counter, remixing the likes of the xx, chairlift, the rapture, prins thomas and john talabot (who he also co-wrote the incredible ‘fin’ album ender ‘so will be now...’ with) as well as djing around the world, pional has been keeping very busy indeed. for his phonica release he has produced two versions of two very special tracks. on the a-side, ‘xme’ is a melancholic and uplifting electronic excursion with delicate flourishes of it’s synthesised melody becoming a real ear-worm throughout its six and a half minutes. the slower and more foreboding ‘quiet ceremony’ reinterpretation takes the same melody in a darker direction. on the other side, ‘one night stand’ is a bumping, stripped back and moody club track with ghostly vocals floating above metallic pads rising to a release of energy and emotion. the ‘slow drumapella’ lowers the tempo and alters the feel of the track, reducing its elements to a bare-bones drum track with the vocal, fx and pads eventually coming to the fore.

still hope is their second single and the follow up to motorway jam (their double a side with palms trax from late last year) which sees them collaborate with anthony anaxagorou, a british born cypriot award winning poet and essayist, whose poetry and fiction have appeared on bbc newsnight, bbc4, itv and vice. hearing his lyrics via their good friend simbad, secretsundaze connected with anthony and still hope is the fruit of their labour. the original is a potent and political spoken word piece delivered over a rolling house groove. definitely one for the deeper moments with its late night heady feel and full vocal not letting up. the poems in the heart floor version strips the vocal back and adds dramatic strings for a more direct dance floor approach. ex slum village detroit producer waajeed released a couple of killer eps in 2017 on his own dirt tech reck imprint so we had to get him aboard for the remix. his detroit hardcore dub does what is says on the tin and is a peak time slammer while his searching dub goes down a jazzier, spacey route with live sounding drums and dreamy pads.

for phonicas landmark 20th release on the main label we go back to a classic from the same year the shop opened stereofuses casino ep, originally released on berlin label salo in 2003. the casino ep marked the first collaboration between martin wörner & thorsten diegel as stereofuse. they followed it up with a string of other 12inches for other labels but its this initial 12inch that has been fetching high prices second-hand as one of the most sought after releases on salo and for very good reason. a timeless ep sitting somewhere between house and techno (before tech-house became a disputed tag-line!) with the likes of ricardo villalobos & craig richards playing it regularly in their sets.

earth trax is kruczynnski s take on strictly club material, yet channeling the very same baltic melancholy he uses in his other projects. following on from his 12inchs on rhythm section and dopeness galore, his phonica 12inch begins with lavventura, a deep yet glittering house production with a piano led melody we couldn’t get enough of, so we present two versions across the a-side. the main version is preceded by a fantastic dub version, shades of kerri chandler shine through on this one! on the flip his otherworldly interpretation of house and techno continues with nokturn and hg, both pad-rich, ethereal productions of the highest quality that perfectly compliment the a-side and round out the record in style.
