Once again, TuningSpork Records ventures away from its trademark funky house in exchange for something a little more unexpected. Last summer, the label issued >Free Your Mind< (TSEXTRA), a Baleraric groove crafted by Jay Haze and Ricardo Villalobos. Now comes another non-sequitur: >Comptine d un autre été: l après-midi< (TSULTRA), Mr. Tiersens piano composition reconstructed for the dancefloor by Jay. French composer Yann Tiersen has a minimalist approach that many electronic producers could learn from. His piece (the title of which roughly means >Nursery rhyme of another summer: the afternoon<) provides the basis for this melancholy track. DJs addicted to hyperbolic effects plugins might hesitate to play this - but those who appreciate subtlety will be rewarded here. Tiersens original composition is tastefully manipulated into a track that makes sense in a club context, yet sets itself apart from the usual techno/house fare, providing a rare introspective moment on the dancefloor. And it might be worth mentioning: if you play this track and the floor doesnt fill up with ladies, then it probably means youre DJing at a gay club. (Not that theres anything wrong with that!)
