Coin Operated are on fire at the moment, make no mistake about it. Just when many observers were predicting that ‘wonky' was dead in the water, along come some fresh blends and all of a sudden it's time to rock'n'roll again. While the basic template might not have changed that much over the last few years (huge parping bass, heavy distorted drums, crazy vocal samples, sharp synth warbles & glitches), there is a renewed dancefloor sensibility with the ‘new school' of producers that removes a touch of the random mentalism and replaces it with a momentum and drive that means these tunes are guaranteed club killers. In short, they have remembered what the music that many of them sample was all about in the first place. That's not to say that this is some lame-ass nu-electro bullshit, it's balls-out rave but put through the noughties blender…and it's all the better for it. Wonk me up, Scotty.
