Eli Escobar on Wurst?!?! Yep, you got that right. While the man originally made his name on the NYC hip-hop scene in the late 90s, Eli’s scope of music is far broader. The man’s spent the past decade remixing everyone from Chromeo to M.I.A., Britney Spears to Diplo, and most recently DFA hotshots Holy Ghost!, not to mention dj’ing the world over, and of course, at his most excellent parties Night People and WORK! here in New York.
Eli and Wurst label boss Roy Dank became friendly a year or so ago while playing the same venues around town. Not too long after, Eli asked Roy about mixing down tunes to which he suggested working with Nick Chacona, esteemed disco and house producer, not to mention Roy’s partner in Beg to Differ. Next thing you know, Nick’s calling Roy, freaking out about the tunes he’s mixing for Eli. Roy was immediately taken by one in particular, “Desire”, loving it so much he even asked Eli if he and Nick could remix it. While the song was signed for digital release on Plant Music, there was still no home for its vinyl release. Roy just couldn’t let such a beautiful tune not get pressed on wax, and so here it is for your listening and arse-wiggling pleasure!
“Desire” is arguably Eli’s most accomplished work to date. The song is a huge step forward for the DJ/producer, pairing classic Chicago drum programming and the warm instrumentation of 90s NY deep house with the sublime vocals of none other than Nomi Ruiz, Jessica 6 frontwoman and
former Hercules & Love Affair diva. Summer anthem territory to say the very least! Beg to Differ take things into darker, sexier territory with a surprisingly house-ier affair than one might expect from the duo.
