With its 21st release, Subb-an ‘What I Do’ remixes; Culprit reinvigorates one of its signature tracks (and one of its biggest 2011 successes) while introducing three long-admired talents to the label, Tom Trago, Konrad Black and Burnski.
The four remixes represent a great snap-shot of modern underground dance music; Rush Hour’s Tom Trago with his cutting-edge house retroism, Berlin’s influence in Canadian-born Konrad Black’s rich electronic sonics and the New Wave of British House with Leeds’ Burnski. All three are unique producers and talents, who have transcended genre boundaries. Culprit was proud to merge their similarly trail-blazing mindsets on this special release.
Tom Trago is fast carving out a sound and reputation that are both totally unique, blending a house and techno palette with fattened up B-Boy low-end and attitude. Trago’s ‘Revanche’ remix is a discerning DJs’ bomb. Bereft of massive breakdowns or big melodies, Trago’s faultless working of percussion, basslines and sequencing turn this into an epic groove. A2’s ‘In Good Hands’ remix is a more concise, punchy track, with a “bigger” acidic bassline, the ying to A1’s yang. Trago grabs the best of Bristol bass, acid house and classic techno, sticks it all in a blender and comes out with something classically contemporary and totally Trago.
Long time friend of Droog, Konrad Black, finally makes his landing on the label after the honour of being Culprit Sessions first international DJ guest in LA many years ago. It may seem incredulous that he hasn’t made an appearance on Culprit previously, but Todd Shillington aka Konrad Black is a producer notorious for being selective and exact. His ‘What I Did To You’ remix contains classic Konrad Black elements - a precise calibrated, ominously slithering bassline melody, sultry vocal drops, sitting on top of tightly programmed percussion. With a nod to Culprit, the remix is rooted in deeply groovy mid-tempo funk, an electronic strut that perfectly marries the label and artists' personalities.
James “Burnski” Burnham is at the front of a prodigiously talented generation of young UK producers that includes Jamie Jones, Matt Tolfrey, Subb-an and Inxec – all of which have strong ties to Culprit. Such was Burnski’s love for the original Subb-an’s track, that he approached the label with the ready-made interpretation, simply too good to turn down. An extended stay in Mexico after the 2011 BPM Festival – where ‘What I Do’ was first doing dancefloor damage, clearly inspired Burnski and his ‘Tulum’ remix – the sun-burned tropical vibe is evident. Burnski produces the most upbeat version in the package, aimed squarely at terraces and rooftops – Culprit’s patented domain. It’s a cohesive conclusion to one of Culprit’s most diverse releases to date
