Hypercolours latest release comes in the form of >Higher Level<, a brand new release from label co-owner Alex Jones that is tastefully augmented by remixes from Mr Fingers and Hypercolours latest signings, Groove Armada.
Jones’ reputation for the sort of house music that takes a unique path is well deserved. Whether it’s the choice of sounds, the levels in the mix or the occasionally bizarre arrangements, Jones belligerently ploughs his own path and is one of the few house artists who can claim to be completely unique. The designer behind Hypercolour’s ever-striking artwork, Jones even gets to imbue his own releases with the sort of irreverent humour that has led to him being known as the Spike Milligan of house music by nobody in particular (or just ‘bell’ to his friends). With ‘Higher Level’, Jones typically confounds expectation by delivering a his most straightforward cut yet. Classic in its elements and references, it’s a track that employs a small mixture of percussion, an original vocal (courtesy of Alex’s neighbour, Alan Winfield) and key samples to create a vibrant and powerful tune that is as classy as it is high impact. Mr Fingers, an informed choice considering the original’s timeless tropes, turns in a creeping, stripped interpretation in his Chicage Jackin’ Mix which is, as you’d expect, beat-perfect house music. Groove Armada’s Love Is The Dub rounds the ‘Higher Level’ EP off with unabashed peak time sensibilities. From the held-basslines to the souring strings and hooky vocal edits, it’s Groove Armada doing what they do best?
