The Gruuv imprint has just dropped a new EP by European party lovers Spirit Catcher, featuring a collaboration with Dubais Raxon alongside remixes from Kindimmer and Ostgut Tons Borrowed Identity.
Belgian duo Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet, aka Spirit Catcher, have been in the game for over a decade. The production duo describe themselves as "a pair of European weirdos looking for life and love between keyboard's keys and automated faders" and have delivered material for imprints such as Silver Network, 2020Vision, Petz Recordings, Systematic and Noir Music.
Their output on 2020Vision back in the mid noughties held a quintessential part in shaping the new wave of electronic sounds that were taking over from the dominant tribal house sound at the time.
It was in fact this sound that inspired label heads Audiojack to start making their own music. Fast forwarding 10 years, Spiritcatcher fired a demo over to Gruuv and Audiojack were very happy.
They tell us: Whilst the title track offers up a smooth opening number fuelled by staccato synth hooks, sweeping atmospherics and funk-infused bass licks, Audiojack strip the vibe back with gritty drums and meandering bass hooks. Borrowed Identity takes things in the other direction with a striking remix full of organic beats, dreamy pad melodies and metallic stab sequences.
The second half features their collaboration with Raxon and delivers acontemporary slice of electronica featuring elongated bass drones, ethereal strings and modulating synth blips. Ending on Kindimmer's 'Memory Remix', which takes B cut Remember To Forget into murky territory with brooding and minimalistic atmospheres built on stuttering bass and sparse, low-slung percussion.
