Double vinyl featuring 4 tracks from the new Breakage album *When The Night Comes*.
In autumn last year Breakage AKA James Boyle announced he was back with a single ‘Treading Water’ and the announcement that his third album ‘When The Night Comes’ was coming May 2015, now it’s out.
This was the return of one of UK system’s greats, a heavyweight in every sense but in particular when it comes to sub bass self-expression. So skilled that Root’s Manuva once remark he is ‘talking to the squids’ and other suboceanic life.
As we kick off 2015, James offers a free great of a totally new song ‘Revelation’ ft. the soulful voice of Liam Bailey. It’s dark futuristic British soul, dark and reflective. This comes before the arrival of first single ‘Future’ dropping very soon.
When Shy FX created his Digital Soundboy label, the name could have been a blueprint for Breakage, a 21st century sound boy who has carved out his own minimal, hi-tech vision from the UK’s hardcore materials.
His journey began on the drum and bass scene with his remix of Nasty Habits ‘Here Come The Drums’, famed for bringing jungle urgency back to drum and bass. All his unclassifiable work since then, whether people have called it dub step, grime or drum & bass has had his trademark sound engineering brilliance, his unique sense of space and combination of dub and emotional pressure, creating a sleek, refractive jet-black British soul all his own.
He commanded the respect of the reclusive Burial (and collaborated with him on ‘Vial). Made a grime classic without trying (when a 2009 instrumental called ‘Together’ ft David Rodigan got change to the Newham General’s ‘Hard’) as well as re-wired chart conventions with Jess Mill’s 2011’s ‘Fighting Fire’. He is one of the few producers kindred spirits Massive Attack have requested to remix their songs.
Fans of the later will hear the lineage in ‘Revelation’, recognise the atmosphere, created between the drum & bass club, Jamaican sounds and Britain’s dark streets. Next single ‘Future’ to follow.
