During the rave explosion in Paris, beginning of the 90s, ravers & different kinds of people started to go out in big warehouse on the outskirts of the city. DJs from USA (Detroit, Chicago, New York) and European DJs (Italy, Holland, Germany) were playing together. Something new was happening and from all these tendencies, another kind of house was born.
We called it “Progressive”. As Guillaume La Tortue, Jerome Pacman and Armand to name a few (truly the best Parisians DJs at that time), Sonic aka Jean-Charles Rousselle was a messenger from this period, educated by Producers & DJs likeDerrick May, Eddie Flashin Fowlkes, Francesco Farfa, Miki, Roby Jay, Baby ford, Joey Beltram or Lenny Dee.
Sonic quickly became a key component of the Parisian electronic underground, playing in the biggest events in France and beyond. He started his own label Omnisonus in 1993 with the first release being produced by Jerome Pacman “China Shika & A Voice Spoke To Me”. As it received such acclaim from so many, we decided to repress this legendary EP from Sonic “Q.Bick & The Game” played recently by Ricardo Villalobos, Rhadoo, Nicolas Lutz, Raresh among others ..This two-track EP was truly the future house of the 90s : “Q.Bick (Excursion Mix)” has classic house rhythms, with shorts pads that really captivate, reminding us of the atmosphere of today. The strong bass line that comes at the middle of the track creates a feeling of future & mystery. Following this, a kind of harmony made with an acid bassline & weird voices results in something new & industrial, definitely a French approach! “The Game (Minimal Mix)” was more of a ‘peak hour’ track at that time, that now we might call tech house. It starts with a sample from Touché Records (Dobre & Jamez label), then utilises a heavy bassy beat. A simple yet effective loop that will grip you, helped by some samples taken from the Martin Luther King speech in Washington 1963 “I Have A Dream”.
We are so happy to repress this legendary EP from such a period of happiness and madness that we had in Paris We send love to Jean-Charles Rousselle aka Dj Sonic… thanks for trusting La Vie En Rose.
