Yasha is 28 year old Joe Gillick, who grew up immersed in the sounds of UKG & grime on the streets of South London. He founded Orphan in 2015 with his friends Sage Redman and Billy Meddleton. The three began throwing bi-monthly parties in Deptford, their aim was to feature the unsung heroes, the seminal artists that weren’t often regulars in the crowded London club circuit.
His a/b side chronicles his forced move from London to Seattle, due to his now wife Sage, and co-founder of Orphan’s UK visa expiration. Arriving in the Pacific Northwest, Joe found a burgeoning warehouse techno scene alive and well in Seattle. This would come to inform his b-side Landing in 206. In an effort to unite Seattle’s somewhat splintered music community, the pair launched Orphan. Radio, an internet, artist centric station inspired by their local London outlets like NTS and Balamii. Orphan. Radio's focus is to showcase local artists and DJs, highlighting the diverse music community in Seattle, as well as feature touring national and international artists with their own distinctive flare. Recent guests include Shanti Celeste, Octo Octa, DJ Manny & DJ Taye, Moodhuts’ Neo Image & Local Artist and more.
Landing in SW9 chronicles a recent visit to his hometown after two years away, and getting lost in familiar streets after the abundance of gentrification. The song hits dark UKG notes with a wobbly liquid bass.
