Die limitierte 180g Vinyl-EP "Between Two Waves" markiert den Beginn der Zusammenarbeit des genreübergreifenden Piano-Trios GoGo Penguin mit XXIM Records. Zugleich ist die EP die erste Veröffentlichung der Band von Pianist Chris Illingsworth und Bassist Nick Blacka mit ihrem neuen Drummer Jon Scott. Inspiriert ist "Between Two Waves" von der Dualität der großen Ereignisse in dem Leben der Bandmusiker in den Jahren zuvor. So gab es Grund zum Feiern anlässlich der Geburt eines Sohnes, aber auch Tragödien durch den Verlust von geliebten Menschen. Die 5 Titel der EP sind folglich kraftvolle Kompositionen, die Momente des Glücks, der Trauer und Erneuerung einer der aufregendsten Bands der zeitgenössischen Musik einfängt. In ihrer Musik verbindet die 2012 in Manchester gegründete Band klassische Einflüsse, Jazz, minimalistische Klaviermelodien, hymnische Riffs, kraftvolle Basslinien und elektronisch-inspirierte Drum Beats. Kritiker haben die Musik von GoGo Penguin häufig als beeinflusst vom Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Massive Attack, Brian Eno und Komponisten wie Schostakowitsch, Debussy oder Philip Glass beschrieben.

As the band regroup after the strange, challenging and at times, tragic couple of years which preceded it, this album captures a moment of rebirth and movement for one of contemporary music’s most exciting bands and explores that sense of excitement and anticipation as you move through life. With a new line-up, drummer Jon Scott joined pianist Chris Illingworth and bassist Nick Blacka a few months before the recording sessions at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios, and a new label, XXIM Records. For the band, it represented both business as usual with a welcome return to the recording studio, but also something of a fresh start. A chance to explore new ideas and experiment, as they expanded the range of sounds and voices within the tracks, and the Eurorack modular and Moog synths found their places between their signature piano, double-bass and drums on tracks like Badeep, Wave Decay and Lost in Thought.
