n’toko ist ein experimenteller hip hop-künstler und produzent aus slowenien. seine ersten sporen verdiente er sich als frontmann eines lokalen hip hop-kollektivs namens moveknowledgement. n’toko wurde schnell durch sein technisches können und seine schnelligkeit als rapper bekannt und gewann dadurch sogar zwei nationale freestyle-wettbewerbe hintereinander. neben drei slowenisch-sprachigen alben veröffentlichte er mehrere eps in englischer sprache, von denen zwei auch in japan auf dem markt kamen. diese beiden scheiben haben mittlerweile kultstatus bei underground hip hop-fans und liebhabern alternativer musik erreicht. parallel dazu spielte n’toko ausgiebige touren in europa und den usa, wo er gast auf diversen festivals war (u.a. reeperbahn festival, glastonbury, exit, inmusic, best buy theatre nyc). derzeit engagiert n’toko sich auch politisch in slowenien und hat sich zum viel-gelesenen kolumnist und autor gemausert. auf unique erscheint sein neues album “emirates”, und es vereint kritische texte, straighte beats und düstere, elektronische sounds.

trained in the art of deejay toasting by the legendary dennis alcapone, lester bulllock initially called himself alcapone junior, until maverick record producer lee scratch perry renamed him dillinger in the early 1970s, following his success on a west kingston sound system called smith the weapon, based in the ghetto of payne avenue. perry cut dillingers first dozen tracks, and there was early work for other producers such as prince tony, augustus pablo, enos mcleod and phil pratt, then, dillingers debut album, ready natty dreadie, was a local hit for studio one, but the cb200 set for island catapulted him to international prominence. yet, the dillinger material with the roughest edge was always produced by bunny striker lee, as this lp, answer my question, so amply demonstrates. first issued in the netherlands on the scramble label in 1977, it shows dillinger on fearsome form, his relaxed rhyming toasts tackling sound system matters, the rastafari lifestyle, action movie subplots, the highs and lows of romantic relationships, the need to help the less fortunate, and other burning issues of the day with biting wit and verbal dexterity, all delivered over tough aggrovators rhythms—including an unusual cut of the three piece suit rhythm. go deh! reissued on lp and cd, on cd for the first time ever!

produced and recorded in 1965 during a time when chicago soul was one of the most influential sounds in r&b.the dontells entered the studio and cut two tracks that put that sound on full display. the session was led by producer calvin carter, world famous arranger johnny pate-along with the cities top musicians. these tracks were never released and have only been heard by a few people until now. the a side “move on down the line” grabs you from the first second the needle drops. a mid tempo love song with a trademark arrangement from pate and a vocal melody and approach in the style of chicago’s king of soul, curtis mayfield. “there goes a fool” is the b side and is a reminder why the dontells were one of the best groups out of the windy city. another brilliant production with a top notch arrangement. horns, strings, a swinging backbeat and that signature chicago vocal sound lead by the sweet harmonies of nate, leroy, manuel & ralph. this is no doubt a 60’s soul classic in 2017!

they are dangerous is the second song released by senator gary. the riddim was build by the late great keyboard player winston wright (1944-1993) and the vocal was recorded at creative sound studio. the tune was produced by neville reid who died a few years ago. senator gary is also called imara, abbasani and now he is voicing under the name of i-maa-raa. so the quest to find him was not so easy, thanks to marshall neeko for the help.

atr is a one of a kind reggae collective based in parkside brooklyn. founded by scrillamatic and kg, at their core they are just group of friends who hang out in the park and sing, all day. the routine is simple, they meet up at their favorite hangout spot on the side of a lake, play beats off of a beat up but loud stereo, and belt out lyrics out into the air. sometimes a crowd gathers but it’s usually just a few like minded artists sharing their love for music. natives of the west indies, but coming of age in brooklyn, they have a very unique perspective on life and the world we live in. with subject matters varying from traditional roots medleys, smoked out ganja anthems to gangsta badman chants to heartfelt soulful ballads telling tales of the ghetto and more, they have a lot to say.

experienced crate diggers are no doubt familiar with new birth, the 17-piece funk ensemble sampled on classic hip-hop records by wu-tang clan, de la soul, junior m.a.f.i.a., black sheep, lil wayne, ice cube, and many more. the genesis of new birth can be traced back to the nite-liters, a louisville-based instrumental outfit. founded in 1963 by motown songwriter/producer harvey fuqua and saxophonist tony churchill, the nite-liters released a handful of albums in the early 70s, scoring a few minor hits and perfecting the sound that would power new birth to further success as the decade progressed. while much of the the nite liters’ early material has been overlooked, their self-titled debut album is worth revisiting. originally released on rca records in 1970, the nite liters is a raw, soulful masterpiece that has been sampled by kmd, ghostface killah and others.

the mighty flames were a crack bunch of cameroonian musicians, drawn to nigeria by the heavy funk sounds booming across the border like musical moths. for a short time in the late sentries they ‘owned’ port harcourt, destroying dancefloors with an incendiary sound that burned so heavily that it was phosphorescent. metalik funk band is the band at their most deadly.

grill by gbubemi amas is as smooth as the red cardigan artfully slung around his shoulders on the cover. whether he is running through the scales on a cover version of ‘fire and rain’, or trying on his calypso highlife moves on ‘ereyon’, you know amas is a man with a smooth line for every occasion.

pat thomas and ebo taylor are the jagger and richards of nigerian highlife. drawn together by a mutual love of the genre – and an equally intense desire to stop it becoming moribund and bereft of ideas – ghana’s two most progressive musicians added a western twist to this traditional form of african music and gave it relevance again.

blitz the ambassador more organic rap meets west african sounds from ghana. the visionary sound of blitz the ambassador has been years in the making, with each album crafted to reflect a sonic and visual narrative unique to blitz s personal experience. his fourth studio album diasporadical exemplifies this trajectory. blitz spent a great deal of time traveling between accra, salvador bahia and brooklyn experiencing the similarities between the african diaspora. the album title diasporadical was born out of this experience blitz explains. the radical notion that no matter how fragmented the african diaspora is, the influence of rhythm and spirituality remains largely the same.

night train serves both as a marvellous offering for james brown completists, and, on another level, as a brilliant on-record instrumental jukebox, full of booting saxes, guitar sounds that practically force you to get up and dance, and all propelled by a beat that’s spanned the years without ageing one little bit. so there you have it… a great album that proves what james brown and his friends were doing at the start of the ‘60s still sounds amazingly fresh.
