“never change a winnig team”. that s what radio citizen s niko schabel must have thought when he decided to release his fourth album once again on sonar kollektiv. after the success of “the night & the city” (sk310lp / cd) from 2015 and the productive collaboration ever since this seems like a wise resolution. schabel s idea to retrieve to a mountain cabin in salvenberg, tirol with his band and tons of equipment turned out to be an even more crucial factor to the cause. here they could create and record new songs and bring them together neatly for the new album. the 13 tracks assembled here on “silent guide” are – each on its own and in its entirety anyway – best proof how wonderfully this approach has worked out.
double vinyl in gatefold sleeve with download code included.
harry miller aka glow in the dark is neither to be found on any social media channel nor can you google anything about him, let alone does he maintain a website. the man hides completely behind his music and quite obviously in his studio. after his debut in february earlier this year, now already a few months later, his second album drops, “into existence.”
the vinyl release includes a download code.
even though “darkness on the edge of ecstasy” is the first album by jonatan bäckelie under his given name, the singer from gothenburg is not a newcomer at all. under the moniker ernesto he already released four rather jazzy longplayers. as pinku vääty or jong tan bäckelie takes care exclusively of his electronic productions. and over the last few months and years he collected international acclaim as a gifted guest singer. for example on alex barck s debut (“reunion”) on sonar kollektiv.
double 12 inch vinyl with download code included.
last autumn the long-awaited debut “colour” by pete josef saw its release on sonar kollektiv. now the first 12 inch with four fantastic remixes arrives.
now already almost a year has gone by since “inspiration”, the collaboration between jah wobble and singer pj higgins has come out on sonar kollektiv. with “chaingang (remixes)” we get a further renewal of one of the eight tracks off the album. for instance utrecht, netherlands based multi-instrumentalist and producer pitto gets down to work to morph the song into an eight-minute spheric techno extravaganza. some sort of a teaser for his upcoming album on sonar kollektiv later this year (although it will sound completely different). also releasing an album on sonar kollektiv in 2015 is producer marlow from weimar. his voodoo version of “chaingang” draws nearer to the original and incorporates the jubilee style gospel chanting to a hypnotically impelling rhythm. at the right time at the right place this remix will cause outmost frenzy on the dancefloor.
the seventh episode of the based on misunderstanding series is true show-stopper: last summer the ultra hot duo manhooker(tomasz guiddo switala and sebastian mavin magassouba) digged itself together with paul bonomo aka snax (capatain comatose) in its studio to record with cloud 9 a veritable late summer hit. once their first 12inch on ostgut ton caused a burst of enthusiasm, the hype will be fuelled with this release. this is pop music at its best with lots of soul for the sophisticated dancefloor.
in january the debut album the damage is done by hot coins, the disco crossbreed project by danny berman (best known for his house productions as red rack em), was released. his personal time machine journey into the sights and sounds of downtown new york sometime around the late seventies/early eighties is much more than a tribute to his heroes of those times. its also a brilliant examination of todays club music.
producer/multi-instrumentalist stefan merse ulrich and singer/songwriter neve aka alexa voss are neve naive. and with the inner peace of cat and bird they just released on sonar kollektiv one of the most astonishing debut albums of the year.
the sixth record store day will take place. sonar kollektiv has two very special goodies in store: theres the limited 300 copies 12inch of the paskal & urban absolutes remix for jazzanovas >that night<.
while fetsum is about to take the us by storm (after a california tour, in march hes going to perform at the sxsw festival in austin and at the pre-oscars party at the villa aurora in la) sonar kollektiv releases four seminal remixes of his song letters from damascus. one of the centre pieces of his current album the colors of hope is not describing the political situation in syria, its more of an autobiographical tale about the golden voiced german-eriteans life.
the latest secret love 6 is accompanied again by a special ep. next to two out of the fifteen tracks off the compilation an exclusive remix by alex barck of unforscenes >dark souls< will be included.
sonar kollektivs inclination towards dubbed out pop/dance music is definitely no secret (see fat freddys drop or eva be). but with this brand new 7inch the berlin label hits the nail on the head. chicago-born jeremy sole is one of the program selectors at renowed la radio station kcrw and hosts a weekly party in santa monica where he blends afrobeat, funk, reggae, latin, brazilian and everything else under the sun!
within the whole >i human< remix package this is probably the funkiest 12inch of them all. it is a gathering of the funkiest remixers/producers at the moment.
jazzanova have given us an extremely nice christmas gift this year. they produced together with secret love hero sascha gottschalk aka thief a lovely one sided 7 single. the sirens call is based on a jazzanova instrumental of the same name to which thief has added lyrics and written a melody. limited collectors item
there’s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, “future bliss” comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track “step one” with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark’s tracks is energized mostly by miller’s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. “future bliss” is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of “1987”, the broken beat of “7 billion = 1”, the synth pop of “the last dance” and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this “future bliss”.
five years after the excursion to san francisco schabel now returns with his combo to the haven of his hometown. “the night & the city” is an album tailor-made for sonar kollektiv: a melange of genres which deploys live instruments on an equal footing with samples and herewith becomes a highly explosive mixture of latin percussion, funk, poppy dub, moody, folky soul, afrobeat, ethno-jazz, bossa nova, hiphop und blaxploitation soundtracks.
nice price deal !!! a good year lies ahead for sonar kollektiv: one of the stables most successful and most enduring horses is back at the starting gate. after a hiatus of seven years micatone will finally release their new and long-awaited fourth album >wish i was here< in march. with >gun dog< we get a jaunty candy as a taster for the enhanced richness, maturity and deepness of the berlin based fieve-pieces sound. in addition to the original album version the 12 inch features a more laid back rendition (shuffle version) and a remix by sonar kolletiv honcho alex barck. after his widely acclaimed remixes f.e. for incarnations and jeremy glenn, barck once again shows proof of his understanding how to make a proper song work in the club, most preferably at peak time. building up and up until half way through it suddenly breaks down to cause one of these magic, energized moments almost every respectable dj longs for. therefore, we dont see any reason why you shouldnt bag this one in!
the musical connection between berlin and detroit has always been a very strong and inspring one. jazzanova continues this close dialogue by putting mike huckaby in charge of remixing their latest song i human. huckaby is one of the unsung heroes of detroit techno. with his highly acclaimed deep house productions and remixes for deepchord, juan atkins, vladislav delay, pole, loco dice, losoul, and pacou, (just to name a few) he is more than well respected in the citys underground community and way beyond. his remix for jazzanovas latest track (off the brilliant album funkhaus studio sessions) split into two pieces on this 10inch, is a belter by all means. if you wouldnt know better, youd mistake it for a larry heard/mr. fingers production. still huckaby is putting his very own distinctive touch to this rework: a groovy rhythm section is added for extra emphasis on the dancefloor.and as the track builds we find ourselves in deep house heaven screaming for more. you better order two copies of this limited 10inch, in order to seamlessly mix part 1 intopart 2 - or vice versa
the australian dj, producer and musician jad lee likes to have several irons in the fire all at the same time. for instance hes a member of mitzi (along charles murdoch and dominiqe bird), one half of the pan-pacific indiepop duo twiggy lashes and a solo artist known as jad & the ladyboy. under this moniker he releases music which can be described as soulful house with plenty of disco influences. for never come back down jad had singer mark borgazzi in his studio to cut a precious, groovy two-stepper into a genuine pop diamond. in order not to get only radio airplay, but also to be played out in gloomy underground clubs with extra fat subwoofers yannick provides his homicidal sexfactmix. with its untamed bassline and a milling-machine like synthesizer this feels like an unchecked punch to the gut. there will be blood on the dancefloor!
before sonar kollektiv unveil the new studio album from stee downs, he returns with the his new single caught up, backed by remixes from alex barck, pascal & urban absolutes and kyodai.
when sonar kollektiv is presenting musical diggings you can be assured some real gems show up. and what a revelation is the cosmic disco by venezuelan producer daniel grau! an elusive monographic showcase of his very productive creative period between 1978 and 1982 will be released as a double cd on the berlin quality imprint later this year.
finally the time has come! after a long 6-year wait the third edition of the popular computer incarnations for world peace series is due to release very soon. the idle time will be rewarded with a bunch of stunners: tracks by georges rodi & dave sarkys, brenda & the beach balls and anna domino will be featured on the compilation selected by sonar kollektiv-a&r-manager alex barck. of which more later, when the release is ready. to start with, an outright highlight of this set is gonna come out as a pre-release 12inch including two contemporary reinterpretations.
paskal & urban absolutes are celebrating the release of their debut album lux (released in november 2013) with a big bash, encompassing a special remix package and with an illustrious group of liked minded peers. same as with their own work credo of cross-city collaborating (paskal aka alex lives in berlin, urban absolutes aka adrian lives in essen) the twosome assembled half of germany for the first, now available 12inch of the lux remixes.
CHARLES WEBSTER / PASKAL & URBAN ABSOLUTES REMIXES
12 Inch 09.08.13
after the well-received and genre-bending album that was last years ky do mar, studnitzky makes another wise move: by inviting two of the most sought-after remixers at the moment to rework two of the albums tracks the german jazz-trained trumpet and piano player shifts his music smartly towards club land.
on the occasion of the sixth record store day in april, sonar kollektiv releases for the first time a limited 300 copy special edition in celebration of the day, the vinyl and the record store. and it wouldnt be sonar kollektiv wouldnt we be treated with a very special goodie: the new shooting stars and new signings of the label, paskal and urban absolutes took a classic out of the extensive repertoire of the label to task, that night by jazzanova from 2001.
FUNKHAUS STUDIO SESSIONS - WITH BAND AND PAUL RANDOLPH (3XLP + MP3)
3x12 Inch + MP3 14.01.13
jazzanova takes it to the next stage: the funkhaus studio sessions. jazzanova producers, stefan leisering & axel reinemer, went into the studio with their 7piece live band with paul randolph on vocals to record a 14 track set.
sonar kollektiv presents: the genius of phil gerus.with this brand new 6-track ep, the first release for gerus on a major label sonar kolletiv can lay claim to introducing a large talent to a wild audience.
the loose series based on misunderstandings returns. after the last release in 2009 the series initiated by jazzanova dj alex barck based on his former club night at berlins weekend, we are now treated with its fourth installment.
micatone come off with a true masterpiece of sophisticated pop with their new and fifth album >wish i was here< (released in march 2012). not only the music press and feuilletons but also old devoted and newly found fans agree: micatone never sounded better before. the second offspring off the album is a 2-tracker with two very special remixes. label mate stee downes takes on >sweet pain< as if it was his own track and kicks out a vivacious deep house stormer. there is no doubt that this remix will be in every bag of those djs that put some more emotions on the floor. the second remix was orderd in italy - in bologna to be exact. keemani and alex ferratti just started their new project blue mondays and now – with their rework of >just a boy< – promisingly launch their career to become the next in-demand remixers. they dont just lay a vocal track over a pre-programed beat, but use all of their devotion, accuracy and finesse to turn an already astonishing pop song into an anthem for everlasting nights. it is like preparing the perfect sugo: simmer exquisite ingedients for days until your mouth is watering. perfetto!
this is the first of two 12inchs accompanying the jazzanova remix compilation upside down. the remix by dima studitsky on the b-side is a bonus not to be found on the compilation!
the 12 inch features the mesmerizing vocal delivery by detroit singer/musician paul randolph. randolph is a steady member of the jazzanova live band and has been touring with them over the last few years. in his words, >i human< is a statement of the feeling you have when you create music and interact with people in a one-on-one and personal live situation, instead of ambivalent text messages and e-mails. and thats what you can hear in this wonderful piece of live recorded music. uplifting, life affirming, soul soothing and yes, human!
UPSIDE DOWN 2 (MANUEL TUR & DPLAY / MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE RMXS)
12 Inch 29.11.11
this is the second of two 12inchs accompanying the jazzanova remix compilation upside down. next to the motor city drum ensemble remix off the compilation it features two bonus tracks: the remix by manuel tur & dplay and a special dub edit of the mcde remix.
sonar kollektiv started to release their limited vinyl edition for our main releases. these vinyl edition is strictly limited to 500 units!and if this is not enough, they all come in heavy gatefold cover!
this the 3rd installment of the 12inch series based on misunderstandings selected by jazzanovas alex barck and named after his monthly night at weekend club in berlin, is surely the hottest yet. arto mwambe has worked his remix magic on roland appel and lars bartkuhn making this a must have maxi single.
mark e. is back on sonar kollektiv with a winning ep for the jazzanovas based on misunderstandings house series. initial pressing in limited bomu series sleeves. with this 2-tracker entitled fazer/smoke screen mark e. is taking you into a spaced-out and captivating house journey. so dont miss the d-train of mark e. and jump on the bandwagon for a trip with guaranteed house sensations!
with his new night called based on misunderstandings that he hosts in berlins famous club week end, alex barck delivers his personal vision of club music and invites friends that share the same djing philosophy. following the success of the club night, alex further developed his concept and decided to create a special 12inch series on sonar kollektiv. also named based on misunderstandings, this new collection should be regarded as a return to roots for every house dj. it is dedicated to hot club sound that takes you by surprise, gets you dancing without you even noticing it and that really needs to be played out loud now!
now, its official: alex barck is back in his home town berlin. for a whole year he lived together with his family on the small, remote island la reunion in the indian ocean. to recover from his turbulent life as a dj, as member of jazzanova, as a&r manager of sonar kollektiv, as one half of prommer & barck and as a busy record digger? far from it! now with his debut solo album in the luggage he returns back to the party capital of the world.
when two kindred spirits meet, their combination often results in more than just its sum. neve naive is such a coincidence. producer/multi instrumentalist stefan merse ulrich and singer/songwriter neve aka alexa voss have joined forces to come up with one of the most astonishing debuts of this year.
theres rarely music coming out so intimate and life-affirming at the same time. all the more its recommended to enter the world of fetsum and to draw hope from his beautiful songs. this voice will find its audience. theres no hope for that - but certainty.
compiled by jazzanova / feat. soulphiction, christian prommers drum lesson, paul bryan, the black seeds, thief, roland appel, quasimode, two banks of four, lars bartkuhn (needs), benny sings, recloose, and others
jazzanova are proud to announce their next full length, the pool, is due for release via their own sonar kollektiv. it is their most mature and musical album yet and welcomes a host of talented collaborators including jamie cullum, ben westbeech, pete josef, rachel sermanni, olivier st louis, paul randolph and many more.
