after releasing the ep “hear mi name call” with casio love and the sad story behind it, we decided to repress this crucial album to spread even more maddo’s music and his musical legacy.

along with his rival, cornell campbell, johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston, clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown, sugar minott and the diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist glen stair, which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles, ‘god made the sea and sun,’ was not promoted properly, though ‘everyday wondering,’ for rupie edwards, impacted in britain, ‘golden snake’ for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson’s ‘you really got a hold on me’ for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee, who had him voice the rastafari landmark ‘none shall escape the judgement’ (written by earl zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the ‘flying cymbal’ craze. clarke’s resultant debut album, enter into his gates with praise, mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons, slim smith and delroy wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

here it is... a project i unofficially had done since 06Æ. it started when dilla passed february of 06. to cope with the death of my unofficial musical mentor & favorite producer, i started making donuts, uncontrollably. i never planned to release any of the material out of respect for dilla & his craft. iÆve shared some of the music with others, in which they would constantly ask me to hear it, so i decided to put a lil sumthing together and make it official. just for yall. this is a collection of beats i made in 06. some donuts style, some just around that era of 14kt beats. now & laters was always a favorite candy of mine. i used to go to mindells pharmacy in ypsi back in the day and buy all of them. sadly i even stole change from my grandmaÆs (rip) purse for them. ironically, i fell back in love with now and laters around this era. enjoy. 14kt

quazarz came to the earth from somewhere else, a musical ambassador from his place to ours. somehow, through fire or through fury, the palaceer of shabazz palaces caught wind of the tale, and it is through his prism that we hear the story. the beach was there, and atlaantiis, and chemical alterations and cell memories and andre norton, richard k. morgan, and always octavia butler. there were killings and there were votes, and brutality in both. there was sound and there were other worlds, and there was a vastness so participation sometimes came only at the edges. and the palaceer coasted down with the alien notion, like quazarz, and so became. on quazarz when they look at this place they see the inhabitants, the humans, but they don’t assess as we do. and so quazarz was sent to meet a cat with vibration, a creative and courageous, caring, compassionate dude that stood out. the dude was a drug dealer, but that was neither here nor there, until his dealings squashed the rendezvous, leaving our alien alone to figure out what this place is really all about. the vinyl release includes a download code.

…speaking of air and darkness, “born on a gangster star” came into the world in a big damn hurry, like nightfall on an island. you can see it happening, but then again it’s so gradual that the next thing you know - it’s dark.
imbued with the energy and ideas from all the creative embers floating in the atmosphere like fireflies, shabazz palaces recorded this entire album over the course of two weeks with blood in seattle. new gear and new equipment disintegrated comfort zones into dust and a new path appeared in the rubble.
herein the palaceer continues the tale of quazars, a sentient being from somewhere else, an observer sent here to amurderca to chronicle and explore as a musical emissary. what he finds in our world is a cutthroat place, a landscape where someone like him could never quite feel comfortable amidst all the brutality and alternative facts and death masquerading as connectivity.

a fantastic afro-beat album from a fela anikulapo kuti disciple and kalakuta republic member. a sublime spiritual and political session recorded in 1979 at the emi studio in lagos (nigeria). arranged and self-produced, this second kingsley bucknor‘s album, hopelessly obscure and impossible to find ranks alongside the best afro-beat album in history!

two more recent 70s, modern soul-style discoveries were issued last year on the “hotlanta soul 4” kent cd. lorraine johnson verified that the sumptuous vocals on ‘a love like yours’ were indeed hers, though again the author of the song is unknown. deep velvet give a much more harmonious take on ripple’s ‘complain to the clouds’, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song.

the aristocrats were originally from bridgeport, connecticut, but came to philadelphia in 1973 where they recorded five tracks with bobbi eli at sigma sound studios. only one single was released, the philly classic “let’s get together now” on warner brothers records. original pressings can fetch up to £150. the expansion pressing here is extra special as the ‘b’ side “loving you is mellow” has never previously been released on 7” or vinyl. it is in fact the original version of a song later made famous by major harris but in it’s own right an exceptional piece of philly magic.

der nigerianische musiker fela kuti gilt als begründer des afrobeat. das label knitting factory legt nun verschiedene werke aus dem backcatalogue als neue vinyl-edition vor. diese entstammen ursprünglich dem von brian eno zusammengestellten set -vinyl box 3/compiled by brian eno- und waren einzeln nicht erhältlich. schwarzes vinyl / 180g. das 1971 aufgenommene album -shakara- begründet das genre des afrobeat und experimentiert mit dem einsatz musikalischer mittel: erstmals mit zwei gitarristen, die ihre riffs parallel anlegen, werden Überlagerungseffekte geschaffen, die der musik einen starken drive und eine hypnotische wirkung verleihen
